Spring and Summer Productions
Both spring and summer productions present a variety of dance performances including new works and as well as selections from the repertoire. These productions have featured works by both locally and nationally known choreographers including: Peggy Baker, Robert Desrosiers, Jennifer Dick, Danny Grossman, Nicholas Khan, Sarah Joy Stoker and Paul Winston.
The repertoire of over fifty works reflects a wide range of disciplines including ballet, modern dance, jazz and mime. Equally varied is the subject matter which includes everything from the interpretations of some of the Greek classics to traditional ballet and indigenous works reflecting Newfoundland folklore and legends.
Spring 1999, saw GYPSY SPIRIT produced at the LSPU Hall, based on the music of Serguei Tchepournov. In August of the same year, a new production, based on the same music, entitled GYPSIES was presented for four weeks in beautiful Pippy Park.
Spring 2000 once again found Kittiwake at the LSPU Hall, with an evening of new works entitles LIGHT AND SHADOWS, featuring newcomer composers to the Kittiwake family; Paul Bendza and Clarke Ross.
August 2000 brought PIRATES IN THE PARK. Audiences were encouraged to come to Pippy Park, pack a picnic, round up the family and run away for an evening of song, dance and storytelling as Kittiwake Dance Theatre celebrated the exciting and energetic world of the pirate; the spontaneity and fun typical of the pirate culture, and explored the Spanish Main, Blackbeard and the Jolly Roger, not to mention Newfoundland's own Peter Eastman.
Summer 2001,saw a return visit by the Ontario based dance company, MOTUS O DANCE THEATRE, who set their signature piece ALICE on approximately forty local dancers. This exciting event took place at the LSPU Hall during Festival 5.
Also in the Summer of 2001, Kittiwake produced an exciting evening by the Duck Pond in Pippy Park, as they showcased The Hag, Crossing the Barrens, and two new works. Unfortunately the weather didn't co-operate and only one of the scheduled performances took place - pictures, however were taken. It is such a beautiful place for an evening's entertainment, but Newfoundland weather is no respecer of the arts!
A major step in Kittiwake's growth saw the company present an evening at the Arts and Culture Centre on April 27, 2002. Featuring Martin Vallee's SNOW MAIDENS, the programme also had a work by Larissa Rog, and a remount of Linda Rimsay's TAINNAMAN SQUARE and PHILOSOPHER'S PHANTASMAGRIA, drew an enthusiastic audience, and great critical response.
July 2002 saw Kittiwake perform for two nights at the LSPU Hall, with a mixed programme featuring works by Katherine Wright, Larissa Rog, Jennifer Dick and Linda Rimsay.
