Newfoundlander Richard Stoker to receive National Arts Centre Award for Distinguished Contribution to Touring - October 6, 2002

The National Arts Centre is pleased to announce that Richard Stoker, Manager of Programming and Promotion for Newfoundland and Labrador's Arts and Culture Centres, is this year's recipient of the National Arts Centre Award for Distinguished Contribution to Touring in the performing arts. The award comes with a cash prize and a specially designed sterling silver sculpture by Edmonton artist Roy Leadbeater, and will be presented at the conference the Canadian Arts Presenting Association (CAPACOA) on October 6, 2002, in Ottawa.

"Richard Stoker has been instrumental in bringing quality performers to Newfoundland and Labrador and for opening up the Atlantic region to Canadian artists," said Peter Herrndorf, President and CEO of the National Arts Centre. "It is only natural that the National Arts Centre recognizes an individual so passionate about bringing together audiences and artists from all regions of Canada."

For over 30 years, Mr. Stoker has played a crucial role in presenting talented artists in Newfoundland and Labrador, a remote area long under served by the touring industry. He is known for his commitment to serving the artists he brings to Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr. Stoker is a founding member of the Atlantic Presenters Association and the St. John's Arts Depot Committee and has served as juror at the East Coast Music Awards and the JUNO Awards.

Established in 1992, the National Arts Centre Award for Distinguished Contribution to Touring honours exceptional achievement in fostering the touring of live performing arts in Canada. The recipient is chosen from nominations solicited from within the industry and is selected by a jury composed of presenters, artists, management and a representative from the National Arts Centre and CAPACOA. The recipient may be an individual, performing company, corporation or other organization.

Previous recipients include Nicholas Goldschmidt (2001), Bruce Owen (2000), the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (1999), David Haber (1998), Dr. Elmer Iseler (1997), Jean-Paul Gagnon (1996), Hugh Davidson (1995), Mark Porteous (1994), George Zukerman (1993), and CAPACOA (1992).
